Annegret Hoch succeeds with her expansive wall paintings in catching the eye of the viewer entering the space, deliberately steering his or her gaze while establishing correspondences with elements of the architecture. …
Based on distinctive design elements in a building, the artist develops a language of forms that analyzes the optical structure and helps the viewer to see it with fresh eyes.
The paintings often alter their appearance depending on the viewing angle… The beholder is thus actively engaged in the work, compelled to shift between different standpoints in order to take in the complex picture.
Hoch conducts the eye of the viewer around corners and edges, builds optical bridges to more distant walls or even onward to the outer skin of the building – to the outdoors. She hence systematically seeks to anchor the building in the context of its surroundings, either as a self-contained whole or as part of a wider complex.
